[mood | awake]

On August 15th, Cory and I will be flying out to San Jose to visit with his family for three full weeks. This will literally be the first vacation we've been able to have since moving here in 2002, and you can imagine how excited we are to be able to go see his folks and be back on the sane smoke-free west coast for so long. Hoping to be able to visit friends while we're out there (any of you guys still out there?!) and a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium is on the agenda. \o/

gunna be so niiiiiiiice

Been prodding at math - starting with middle school stuff and working my way up. Cory's mom is going to lend me a hand with it while we're there, as well, so hopefully I'll be well on my way by the time we get home.

In the meantime, we're pulling an all-nighter so that we can run Cory's portfolio, letter of intent and resume in to SCAD tomorrow today. We hit AIU on Monday to find out about his transcript and the registrar is investigating for us, but as of now, there's nothing we can do. Fingers are still crossed for making the fall quarter.

There's a long-haired girl who waits, I know [Jul. 23rd, 2008|02:43 pm]

[ Late again, for extremely happy reasons; details will follow. ]

A major part of the exhibit was about the Sistine Chapel, which I knew was going to be good when in the discussion of preparations to building the current Vatican they put in a glass box a foot-long iron compass (the circle-drawing kind) with the caption, ``Tradition, never disproved, holds that this compass was used by Michealangelo''. Who could argue a provenance like that? It also pointed out how ``the similarity of the instrument compared to modern ones'' showed off the sophistication and care which Michealangelo took with his tools, although I would have to read a 380-page book by Henry Petroski to learn how much the drawing compass has evolved in the past five centuries, and it would explain how engineering is a matter of choices to optimize results while minimizing cost while keeping failure modes understood again.

There were more pleasantly human touches, though, such as playing cards which were found underneath the plaster in renovations -- a four of clubs, a Queen of diamonds, and a card I couldn't make out. Those, it turns out, date to around 1710, and probably were put there by people working on a previous restoration, but you have to wonder how bad a hand the workmen had that they were burying their cards under the mosaic of Creation.

And there was as always stuff I never realized I didn't know: apparently, before Michealangelo was hired for some painting, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was painted to look like a starry night, kind of the way young space enthusiasts would do if it wasn't too much bother to accurately place the glow-in-the-dark stars there. The panels also said the Sistine Chapel was designed with the intent of mimicking the dimensions of the Holy of Holies from the book of Solomon, which I didn't realize was specified clearly enough to be reproducible. (I'm vague on many details of Bible lore; as may have been guessed, I was raised Roman Catholic.) Unexplained was why the Pope picked Michealangelo, who was a sculptor, to hire for such a big paint job.

But also neat was they set up a little bridge with scaffolding and a lowered ceiling to represent what it might have looked like in the middle of painting the Creation Of Adam, complete with the cartoon -- which they explain with just a hint of disdain means not a cartoon but rather the detailed drawing of what was to be plastered over and painted -- for some parts, and a speaker rattling out generic scraping noises and Italian mutterings and the like. I can't say I really felt like I was there, but that might have been because of the crowd and cramped dimensions and that I was on an ahistorical bridge, but I appreciated the effort.

Trivia: Magnetic variation of compasses is most easterly at about 8 am and most westerly about 1 pm. In winter the variation is smaller than in summer. Source: Compass: A Story of Exploration and Innovation, Alan Gurney.

I doubt anyone but [info]satharn is still reading this, but... this news story made me laugh.

I should go to bed. It's almost ten. And I'm tired. But I know that, when I get up, I'll have to go and face my stupid job, in the stupid heat, for another stupid day. I feel like this is my time, and that my time shouldn't be wasted asleep.

Plus? It's hot, and I'm sweating in the style of the proverbial pig. Bleah.

I haven't posted a bento on here in so long! But, I do have the recipe for this bento to make up for it :D I did take a break from all bento making for awhile, but I am back now and I plan on including more recipes and dieting tips on my blog. My bento diet has been a long journey so far, but I'm determined to stick with it until I reach my goal weight! :D

Oh man I love cooking in my mom's kitchen.

XD This bento kinda fell together. I started with the buns in the top layer, then decided I wanted takoyaki! They fit on the buns, and they needed a design. Design made it look like eyes and a face was born! Haha!

Top is BBQ pork buns, taco yaki, and a cucumber skin grin.
Bottom is crab shumai, cucumber hearts, carrots, and a decent amount of edamame as filler. And oh, a little shaker of furikake for the takoyaki.

Side cars hold sauces (kewpie mayo and okonomiyaki sauce) and more fruit salad. Lots of fruit, I am so excited!

This is one of my favorite bento I have made. This kind of box is SO much fun to pack.

39 shirts, 14 totes, 18 mousepads, 3 purses, 4 handbags and a handful of wallets later, I somehow ran out of time to work on the calendar. Woops.

Have to pack these orders still, but out of time this evening. I'll be getting up early tomorrow because Jake has to be out of the house at quarter to 7, so I'll get them done before I go to work.

I am getting SO excited about the fair.

Today's Bento [Jul. 22nd, 2008|08:07 pm]

Contents: Whole wheat mini pitas with bacon, colby jack, and spinach; grapes; strawberries and blueberries

Prep: Bacon was crisped the night before. The mini pitas were easier to deal with this morning for sure.

Verdict: Tasty! I think I'm getting better at maximizing the space in the new bento box. My hard plastic food cups arrived in the mail today, and I look forward to experimenting with them in this box.

Contents: Mini buffalo burgers with colby jack cheese and spinach; roma tomato slices, jicama, and cucumber; mango and blueberries; cheese wedge, grapes, and triscuit

Prep: I made extra mini burgers with last night's dinner. The jicama was also prepared last night. Mango was pre-cut.

Verdict: Tasty and filling. I was hoping to include some seaweed salad in here, but I didn't like how it turned out, so I improvised with the cucumbers instead. The jicama was just as good cold as hot.

These are leftovers from my husband's birthday dinner. I just packed the box as I was putting stuff away. The Citrus Marinated Shrimp Cocktail is really yummy. I got the recipe on Epicurious. I tucked some corn in next to the shrimp. On the bottom are bread slices with Dubliner and Maytag blue cheeses. I gave him a do-it-yourself strawberry shortcake with pound cake in the silicone cup and sweetened cherries and cream in the little containers. BTW - the pound cake is supposed to be Elvis Presley's favorite pound cake.

Bento #2

This is my first bento post, but my second "serious" attempt at making a bento. As you can tell, it's not exactly cute. My biggest priorities are making it look appetizing and utilizing leftovers so that I waste less. I hope that's still appropriate. :)

This one contains leftover fried chicken I made last night (Thomas Keller's Lemon Brined Fried Chicken from Ad Hoc, to be exact), a simple arugula salad with a balsamic-olive oil-dijon mustard dressing, and plain onigiri. In the rectangular box is dessert: leftover poundcake and maple cream (for the boy) and raspberry preserves (for me). The little beetles are sporks.

Subject: No email! No sites!

Panic! Mayhem! Riots in the streets!

(Pls fix.)

First calendar is approved! If things go right, I'll have them a few days into the fair! Yay!

Second calendar... is probably waiting in my inbox for approval. Or will be later today. Printing stuff for orders now - called in to check work status today and will be checking back at 1 to only maybe work. Woo! I got a huge chunk of work done yesterday, and it looks like today I could get ENTIRELY caught up.* Admin stuff was taken care of yesterday, so I'm all caught up on pay and paperwork, got more checks printed, did billing stuff, filled orders like a madwoman, and worked on a non-pay commission-thingy.** Today, I have some heatpress fun to do (shirts - lotsa shirts, and some purses and a dozen mousepads and a few totes), and I will be caught up on all but pre-orders. Which are... pre-orders. Even some of those are worked on, and I've got cardboard already cut up from furniture boxes and extra priority envelopes on order, AND they're all invoiced, so many of them will just be a matter of stuffing and sending.

After the heatpress fun, the third and final calendar files, and if I don't work this afternoon (cross your fingers!), I can tackle the anthology. GET YOUR HIGH-RES FILES TO ME, PEOPLE. Don't make me hunt you down again. Theresa, you get cookies. Delicious, chocolaty cookies.

*Except for emails. Stupid emails. Hates them.

**Yes, am sucker. But it could be huge, and I've REALLY been wanting to draw a dragon lately. Plus I get to keep rights and will be able to tuck it into a coloring book.

Guys...have you ever checked out Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's personal blog?

http://www.ahmadinejad.ir/

Actually, it's not such a great blog; he never updates.  But I find this interesting if not a little hilarious...maybe his real entries are friends-only.

Edit: I hacked in there and this is what I found!

Today I got up and I popped open that new Britney Spears album.  As against Western decadence as I am, I must say that “Gimme More” makes for some very beneficial listening to my great and beautiful ears.  I will invite her to Iran and make for her a chadoor and she will see the honor that is done proper muslim women.  I will throw a party at my house and show her my secret collection of happy meal toys, which I keep around only to remind myself of the ruinous machinations of the west which is plagued with frivolousness and corruption, like little tiny plastic parts that break off easily and are not suitable for children below the age of 3.  I am sure she will be pleased also to see that I still have my Addams family collection in complete and pristine condition.  Don't worry Britney, I will tell them to leave you alone.

A big shoutout to all my Hollywood brothers sporting beards.  Look at these handsome examples of Westerners following shariah, and they don’t even know it!

Looking good, Matt.  Myself, I prefer the scruffy, I’m-just-your-average-dictator-who-likes-a-good-pair-of-sweatpants look.

Some of you may have heard that Iran may be developing nuclear energy for use in bombing people, especially hateful Zionists.  Well, let me put it here officially folks: I’m not doing anything with that nuclear power but using it to light up streets so people can walk safely at night, and take care of their plants and stuff.  Except for women, who may be looking to seduce males by roaming around at such hours.  And occasionally, I will use it to power my new all-Iranian made digital camera.  I have a very nice camera made from technology developed solely in Iran.  I have this cool picture of me in the mirror throwing up the peace sign to all my violent western adversaries with this awesome tan I just got but I can’t find it right now.  :(

So yeah, some of you may know that there’s a bill on the books to make polygamy completely A-OK, I mean, without asking your first wife or anything!  Awesome.  Now, naturally I’m stoked for all my brothers who were thinking about dating new people, but this brother is as single as ever.  So if you guys know any nice devout Persian virgins who look good completely covered up, you let me know!  Nobody too talkative please. :)  OK, well, that’s it for now.  I’m off to go watch Project Runway, I mean, uh, pray to the Name of Almighty God, the All-Knowing, the Most Lovingly Compassionate ;).  God willing, there's gonna be some sweet nervous breakdowns this week; living like a corrupt western infidel will do that to you though, that's all I'm sayin'.  Well holler back if you want 2.

Bento accessories to give away (for cost of shipping) [Jul. 22nd, 2008|10:19 am]

[lanewaychatter]
I'm not sure if this is allowed, but here goes!

Someone gave me 20 small square clear plastic containers with attached lids. They were designed to be used to prepare and freeze baby food. However, they'd be great bento accessories!

The containers are 2" high, 2" deep at their widest (and 1.5" deep at the narrowest point, the bottom), and 1.75" high.

Here's a picture of something very similar: http://www.cheekymonkey.ca/BabyFoodCube.htm The only difference is that the ones I have are square, not rounded.

I don't need any more small containers, and I'd be happy to ship some or all of these to bento-ers looking to add to their small containers collection.

I'm in Toronto, Canada and will ship anywhere for the cost of postage (via paypal).

I haven't written anything here in a long time. Months. In part that's because I've been ill. I'm still ill. I have a chronic and sometimes terminal illness called Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which means that my illness is mental, rather than physical, and there's a lot of stigma about that in our culture. I could write more about this, but it's depressing, and no one really wants to know that I've been seriously contemplating death as an option for months, now... there's a lot of stigma attached to that, too.

Instead, I'm going to write about something positive... [info]rosalarian2's Yu+Me Dream.Spoilers! )

Both made for my husband.

First:

Leftover pork chilli (that he made); brown rice; cherry tomatoes, ham and pepper on picks, wrapped in lettuce. And more rice. I used a small pastry cutter to make the leaves on the chilli and rice. A different colour pepper would have been better for the chilli.

Second: All Day Breakfast bento

Baked beans; a mixture of cut up sausage, bacon, fried potato (a bit burnt, oops); a sprig of parsley; scrambled eggs, fried cherry tomatoes, cherries, a bit of raw broccoli. And, separately, a bread roll. He brought yoghurt and blueberries for dessert.

Rings and things [Jul. 22nd, 2008|03:59 am]

[Tags|]

Dave and I finally have our rings in our possession. First we had to wait while they were ordered and then we had to wait while they were engraved but now we have them and hopefully won't lose them before we can wear them officially. :)

We also have our time reserved at San Francisco city hall for our marriage license and civil ceremony. We'll be a legally married couple on August 6th which should give us time to have photos ready for the reception we're having days later for friends and family.

We're just having a simple civil ceremony because neither of us are religious and we didn't want to put any of our friends through the paperwork rigamarole of becoming a recognized officiant. It's also nice to be able to get married in the same place that started the same-sex marriage revolution, for CA, back in 2004.

Tonight, or rather last night, we finally got our plans set for our Tenth Honeymooniversary. Our Ten Year Anniversary is August 19 so it made sense to have our honeymoon at the same time. :)

We'll be flying to the Big Island of Hawaii on the 18th and staying at a four star resort for a week. It will be Dave's first time visiting Hawaii. I've been four times but I only remember two of those times. I'll never understand why parents think babies and toddlers will remember trips.

Otherwise still freaking out about planning and stuff I haven't done. At least the invitations are out.

Episode 130: En Passant

There comes a point where the GM has to subtly remind the players what they were supposed to be doing, what they've so far ended up actually doing, and provide some sort of underscoring to the inevitable immense gap between those two things. Chancellor Valorum is turning into a very handy campaign plot exposition device for the GM here.

Blah...

Finished the inking of pg 14 around 8 pm or so, wound up taking a nap.  Had a long day of going out today on errands and medical appointment.

12:45 a.m....don't feel like colouring the page just yet.  Guess got tired of staring at it as I inked.

I need to decide colours on the two characters that are going to be introduced anyhow...one is from the written stories, the other is a new arrival.  So I'll just put the downtime to use on that...and to figure out the other colours on the other characters shown in the next pages...they're all ones who've appeared in the written stories.  Kinda hard to draw what's just been written about.

The first panel did make me snerk, tho.

And grease in just a minute [Jul. 22nd, 2008|02:43 pm]

austin_dern

[ Late; outstandingly good reasons; will report later. ]

One of the sidelines of the big cleaning-and-shouting festival which took place a couple days ago: one of my father's urgent demands was that I dust the `entertainment center' -- the shelves with the TV set, Tivo, VCR, DVD player I got my parents for Christmas which they never use, Bose speaker, and 100-disc CD player only used to play Christmas CDs on Christmas Day, along with the very many knicknacks left on top of it. It's true that this needed dusting, since the layer of unswept dust as heavy enough to affect the apparent color of the wood and for that matter the books on top. But he also had this dusting glove so that all I'd really have to do is touch everything. I may be basically lazy, but I certainly have fine skills in touching things. I just avoid doing so due to my obsessive-compulsive disorder.

But one of the things to be dusted was the Tivo box, and I picked it up to dust underneath and the sides and back and such, and as I did, the picture blacked out. I set the box down, of course, and waited a bit since these sorts of things often fix themselves, and maybe there was a storm rolling in interrupting satellite reception. But it didn't come back, and the other TVs were fine, so I unplugged the Tivo and plugged it back in. It reported ``Welcome'' and ``Powering up'', but then didn't report anything past that. I did unplug it and try again a few times, with no greater success.

An hour or so later my father called the DirectTV troubleshooting line, then handed the phone to me because, he said, he couldn't describe the problem so they'd understand it. The phone rang a while, connected for a moment, started ringing again, then hung up. I tried a different number, and they had me try unplugging the Tivo and re-plugging it, which, surprisingly, didn't work. So they said they'd send a new unit -- not a Tivo, technically, but whatever system they're with now -- by Federal Express over the next few days. So if I weren't so busy with other tasks this would have been a great chance to catch up watching DVDs I haven't had the chance to, since there's nothing my parents would rather watch instead that they can, except in their room.

We get to keep the broken Tivo, which is nice for our efforts to collect everything in the entire world, particularly if my father's recollection that we bought it anyway is correct.

Side: Nectarine wedges, strawberries, and a pineapple cake.

The colors aren't very balanced, and there's too much starch. Life got busy all of a sudden, and bento making has taken backseat. :/

I'm continuing to be diligent about packing my breakfast and lunch bentos in the mornings.

For breakfast, I was very excited to use my new bento box.

Contents: Strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi; mini-pitas with lox, goat cheese, and baby spinach; rainier cherries.

Prep: The mini pitas were a pain to deal with. I prefer the Trader Joe's ones, but I got the Whole Foods brand because it's more convenient to my apartment. It took me forever, seemingly, to get the lox, goat cheese, and spinach in. The fruit was easy to slice up.

Verdict: Despite being irritating to put together, the mini pitas were a nice change from my standard mini bagel. The fruit was tasty--I probably could have put even more in.

I was so focused on my new bento box and what I was cooking for dinner tonight that I realized late Sunday that I hadn't thought about lunch for today! Fortunately, I had a lot of leftovers.

Contents: Fusili with chicken sausage, green onion, spinach, orange pepper, roma tomato, and feta; green beans, carrots, and yellow grape tomatoes; blackberries and kiwi; grapes, turkey pepperoni, and babybel.

Prep: Easy--I just popped everything into its containers and voila.

Verdict: I ate everything at lunch, rather than saving one container for a snack. Not sure if my breakfast was too small, if I didn't have enough protein in this lunch, or I was just hungrier than usual. Hmm.

Birthday Bento [Jul. 21st, 2008|06:28 pm]

Today was my husband's birthday. I made him a mini-layer cake by cutting out two tiny circles of cake. I filled it with apricot preserves. It's hard to see, but the cheese hearts spell out HAPPY BIRTHDAY. He got his favorite peanut butter celery, some pickled cucumber, and some nice big shrimp with cocktail sauce. I nestled a little frozen fruit custard in between the shrimp to keep them extra cool.

Bentos and a question [Jul. 21st, 2008|06:12 pm]

Okay, so we have a breakfast-type bento (not really intentional, just happened that way) and another dragonfruit bento.

Question - may seem weird, but what do radishes taste like? I am pretty picky as far as veggies go for bentos and I like how radishes look in bentos but I haven't tasted them before. Input?

Bring on the bentos! )

Top tier: boiled egg (I finally got my molds--yay!) & a cold soba noodle salad with cucumbers, red bell peppers, scallions, rice vinegar, chili oil, chili flakes & black sesame seeds

Bottom tier: blueberries & strawberries. (Wanted to throw some kiwis in there too, but they're still hard as rocks and I have to wait for them to ripen.)

Very first bento. [Jul. 21st, 2008|06:02 pm]

This is the saddest bento ever:

I was all excited for today because I was planning on doing my very first bento! with whatever we had around the house. Unfortunately, I got a call at 8:10 reminding me I needed to cover for someone. I normally go in at 2PM and since the arrangements were made weeks ago, I had totally forgotten! D'oh!

Having to rush, I just threw in some leftovers and that was that. It's a pretty meager beginning, but hey, if I can do this in 2 minutes, including a quick wash of the box in warm water since it was the first use? Just imagine what I can do if I have a few more minutes to pack! Hehehe.

Top: Filled with leftover homemade baked mac & cheese.
Bottom: Laughing cow light regular, leftover grilled chicken.

I also packed a yogurt in my bag.

We've never had a president named Charles, Peter, David, Robert, Paul, Michael, or Joseph, but we've had presidents named Ulysses, Millard, Grover, Rutherford, Woodrow, and Dwight. And two named Franklin.

EDIT: And of course Abraham.
